through the looking glass
by louise arnold
2.4.03
writing

One day I fell through the looking glass,
And was trapped on the other side.
And all that was broken I carried with me,
Reflections and shards of memory,
Bundled tight in an old weathered bag.

On the other side of the looking glass,
No-one could see me.
Red eyes meet work eyes, and cast invisibility.
Occasionally the spell's shattered by fleeting sympathy,
But mostly I'm shadows and dirt.

One day I fell through the looking glass
And the face in the mirror wasn't mine.
It was angles and hollow and cigarettes,
Edges blurred, faintly drawn silhouettes,
And nothing in it seemed like home.

One day I fell through the looking glass,
And was trapped on the other side.
And whilst I scratched my way back into the real,
It's where part of me still lies.
