elephants graveyard
by louise arnold
8.1.03
writing

Absently scratching away at the ring
That fits too cloyingly tight
Smiling, lying the words we once meant
And lying like bookends at night

I whispered away my dreams for you,
Vacuam packed them away
Buried under dust in the attic
Where the rest of our memories stay

The photos are slices of yesterday
Grinning hazily out from the walls
I don't recognise us from their smiling
I don't recognise us at all.

I'm sharing my bed with a stranger
The mirror throws back at me a lie
Our home is an elephants graveyard
Where relationships go to die.
