finding alice
by louise arnold

writing

She fell off the edge of the world one day,
Tumbling out of view,
And into print.
Headlines, articles, questions screamed from postered trees.
Sweeping long grass with sticks, and calling out her name.
Fragments remained, like a life shed, her phone, her bag,
One shoe (lace still tied).

She fell off the edge of the world one day,
And we searched murky water for her.
We shouted until voices became tattered threads,
And empty lives were weaved around the hole she left.

She fell, curiouser, and curiouser,
White rabbits and red herrings,
All things leading to dead ends,
Shrinking so small that nobody could find her.

She fell off the edge of the world one day,
And she dragged the rest of our world with her.
