THE SECTIONS

What's in the Features section?
The Features section contains regular columns by the Intrepid Media Staff as well as selected columns from the Gallery (posted by any and all intrepid media contributors - this means you!). New columns are published every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and sometimes on Thursday (we're gearing up to run a new column every day). The Features section also contains Intrepid Media News and a snapshot of all the activity going on within the site.

What's in the Gallery section?
The Gallery section contains all of the columns from Intrepid Media contributors. We encourage everyone to sign up and post a column of their own, no matter where your interests lie. When you post a column to the Gallery, let your network know so they can read it, discuss it, critique it. Everyone gets a boost from this shared readership. Intrepid Premium members have no limit to the number of columns they can post in the Gallery.

What's in the Projects section?
The Projects section is a place for our members can post and blog about ongoing projects. A project could be almost anything, a book, a record, a business, a film, etc. All members can look in on project updates, and they serve as a "how to" for almost anything in creative or business areas. Only Intrepid Premium members can create an update projects.

What's in the Books section?
Intrepid Media publishes and sells books created by our members. The Books section is where you can find all these books, from books and collections that Intrepid Media creates and releases to books written by our members and published by other companies (our members range from beginners to bestsellers).

What's in the Publish section?
The Publish section is a place for our members to learn more about publishing their own books. Intrepid Media and Lulu.com, the marketplace for digital content on the Internet, have created a partnership to provide authors with expanded sources for creative assistance, publishing services, and promotional tools. Intrepid Media helps Lulu’s authors write, market, and sell books, while Lulu helps Intrepid Media and its members publish. Both Lulu and Intrepid Media offer these services with no up-front cost to the author.

Under the partnership, Intrepid Media serves as an incubator for the author and then walks them through Lulu’s no-cost print and electronic book publishing services. Lulu handles all of the production, storefront, and distribution of print and electronic books, even allowing authors to sell their book on Amazon and other web-based booksellers.

Once published, authors can return to Intrepid Media to promote their book by posting samples of their content or writing style -- short, easily consumable pieces that link directly to a storefront for their book.

What's in the Studio section?
The Studio section is the operations center for our members and contributors. You can edit and update your profile. You can create, maintain, and publicize your columns, and review your ratings and critiques from other members. Only you are privy to the information contained in your own Studio.

JOINING INTREPID MEDIA

How do I sign up?
Simple. It's free, easy, and private. Go here to read more and sign up. Your password will be emailed to you from thebox@intrepidmedia.com (so let us in through your spam filter). You must sign up to write, discuss, and critique columns, and that's free. There are posts on the Intrepid boards that are also free, but to post, you'll need to be a member. For access to premium posts on the Intrepid boards, no limit on the number of columns you can write, and your own intrepidmedia.com portfolio page, you must be a member of Intrepid Premium, and that's cheap, easy, and private.

Does it cost anything to sign up?
Absolutely not. All we need is your name and your email address (which doesn't show up anywhere on the site). You can then write and publish a column, as well as discuss and critique other columns. Intrepid Premium costs about the price of a magazine.

What do I get when I sign up?
Well, for free, you get to write and publish columns, a maximum of two at any given time, for the world to see. You get to participate in column discussions. You get to rate and critique columns. You get to view your own ratings and critiques. You get love and support (not a guarantee!). With Intrepid Premium, you get unlimited column writing and publishing, access to the intrepid boards, your own site at yourusername.intrepidmedia.com (plus more as it comes in). See the Join page for a full list of free membership services and the Intrepid Premium upgrade page for a list of Intrepid Premium services.

I forgot my username and/or password!
Go here. Enter your username or the email address you used to sign up. We'll email your credentials to the email address you used.

WRITING, POSTING, DISCUSSING, CRITIQUING

How do I write a column?
In the Studio section select "Write a New Column" or just choose "write" from the main menu. Choose a title, an optional subtitle, and pick a topic and discipline. THen pour your heart and soul into the big box. SAVE OFTEN! When you're done, you can post it to the Gallery.

How do I critique a column?
The system will check and make sure you haven't critiqued a particular column before. There is a form at the bottom of the column where you can rate the column (the execution, NOT the topic) on a scale of 1 (bad) to 4 (excellent) and give the author some feedback comments.

Is my critique anonymous?
Yes. No one will ever see that the critique came from you. As for what you say, only the author of the column (and the senior editorial staff - joe and jael) sees the critique.

Can anyone else see my ratings or critiques?
For the most part, no. Only you see the critique. People can see your average rating if you can more than one. People can also see the comments but only if they're very positive.

What's to stop me from bashing someone just because they're inexperienced or I don't like their writing style or I don't agree with the content of the column?
Don't be a jackass. You'll get banned.

What are the discussions on each column?
Think of this as a sort of instant letter to the author. Every opinion generates further opinion. Some columns get no discussion, others get plenty. These are not anonymous.

How do I submit a column for publication?
Intrepid Media is different from other magazines. There is no submission process other than signing up and posting your column to the Gallery. Tell all your friends about it. You'll get them to read it as well as other Intrepid readers. We're constantly pulling columns out of the Gallery for a run in the Features section.

How do I get my column into the Feature section?
Keep your eye on the Submissions page for upcoming open dates (although we'll make room if we love a column). The Intrepid Media Staff is always trolling the Gallery for columns that we think may be worthy of some Feature attention. Although we don't guarantee anything (ever!), join up and post your column(s) to the Gallery. If your column generates a buzz, with a lot of reads, critiques, and/or discussion, chances are it's feature-worthy.

How are reads tallied?
Reads are tallied when someone (not you) loads your column up in their browser. Reads are not tallied when someone discusses or critiques your column because we assume they've already read it.

Am I giving up rights to my work?
No. But we retain reprint rights. However, understand that when you post anything on the web it could be considered published, and it's up to you to disclose this information if you try to resell the work.

Why only two free slots for columns?
We want to keep the material fresh, and this is the best way to do it. Go ahead and try new things, experiment, and then trash it all and start over. With Intrepid Premium, you get unlimited columns and more stuff, but it costs money. We learned a lot from those sites who gave the world away for free. They all went away. We'd like to be here for a while.

If one of my columns gets published in the feature section, does it count as my two free column slots?
Nope. We're all about the writers. If we have to suck it up and give you another free slot, cool.

What do I do if none of the topics or disciplines match my work?
You can either select "General" for the topic or the discipline (but not both), or you can email us and suggest a new topic or discipline.

BOARDS

What's in the boards?
The boards are for everyone to read, members to post, and Intrepid Premium members have special threads (sorry, I really am sorry about this, but if you put all-public boards on your site, you're asking for trouble). It's advice, gibberish, information, Q&A, notifications about happenings around the country, as well as a general discussion of pop-culture.

INTREPID PREMIUM

What is Intrepid Premium?
Intrepid Premium is a subscription service for those who want it. Benefits and costs can be found here.

How do I join Intrepid Premium?
Join Intrepid Media for free and then follow the instructions to become a premium member. It's cheap, less than the cost of a decent magazine. You get your own portfolio site at yourusername.intrepidmedia.com, access to the boards, unlimited columns, and more.

How do I cancel my Intrepid Premium account?
Go here to read the cancellation policy.

Can I get a refund if I don't like Intrepid Premium?
Short answer. For a one month subscription? No. For a 6 or 12 month subscription? Yes, on a prorated basis. We're not trying to screw you. Read the cancellation policy.

How do I upload my headshot?
Select My Headshot. All the info you need is on the page. We won't get into how to capture and edit the image, there's a whole Internet out there to tell you how to do that much more eloquently.

If I cancel my premium subscription, or if it runs out, do all my columns get deleted?
Absolutely not. In fact, even if you delete them yourself, it doesn't get you more space. Once you're no longer a premium subscriber, you get two slots to publish a new gallery column, regardless of how many you wrote as a premium subscriber. See how cool we are to you?

If I cancel, can I renew?
Sure. When you cancel, you just revert back to normal contributor (free) status. So when you renew, you continue on from the day you renew.

If I renew my subscription, when does it start?
If your subscription has expired, your new one starts from the day you renew. If you still have time left on your current subscription, the new one starts when the old one ends.
