Foreword
This is insane.
For 10 years now, I've been told that Intrepid Media wasn't going to work. Writing is dead. Community is dead. Social media is dead. Nedermeyer? Dead. On top of that, there was absolutely, positively no way I could build a business and keep it alive and vibrant for ten years on the love of reading something well-written and entertaining.
I've also been told that you can't bottle passion, the thing Intrepid Media is most good at and most known for. We somehow found a way to bring the best creative element out of a largely undiscovered writing population. And we do it all while shunning poetry.
No one counted on a group of rag-tag, mostly unwashed writers armed with nothing more with the love of a good read. Through our collective efforts, we've all moved into various stages of washed -- whether that be giant publishing contracts or representation or bylines in national magazines, we've found a way to elevate. And we're doing it with the true-belief that we can do this for anyone and everyone.
So what your holding in your hands here (or, if you're not into the physical, reading on your phone), is an homage to the common writer, the hundreds of thousands of us that have that novel or article or some other masterwork in our heads.
This is 2007, documented as seen through the passionate eyes of the prettiest cross-section of humanity you’ve seen since "21 Jump Street." We start with Lohan and Miss America and close with politics and the faint opening strains of the Obama juggernaut. In between you'll find barry bonds, the bionic woman, the burger king, bdsm, britney, big country, blogs, and breakfast beer. And that's just the Bs. But we're betting there's a little something in here for everyone, regardless of what it is you're into.
So come along for the ride. And more importantly, visit us and be a part of it. This is the future and everyone gets fifteen digital column inches. Plus, these compilations come out every year, and there's no reason why you can't be in the next one.
Unless you're chicken. But we can help with that too.
A very special thanks goes out to the following amazing people. My wife Allison for providing all the support in the world. Intrepid Media Editor-in-Chief Jael McHenry for being there from the beginning, never wavering, and making us far smarter than we have the right to be. Intrepid Media staff writers who captured 2007 with just the right amount of flavor; Michelle Von Euw, Adam Kraemer, Mike Julianelle, Tracey Kelley, Jeff Walker, Russ Carr, Erik Myers, Jason Gilmore, Maigen Thomas, Alex B, and of course the other current and former Intrepid Staffers and our membership, who continue to impress me on a daily basis, which is worth more than anything else in this endeavor.
Also thanks to Russ Carr again for his ridiculously phenomenal art design. Russ is one of those rare designers who can take the idea, no matter how poorly communicated, and translate it perfectly to images and text. Vibe? Captured.
