10.8.10 : feature column!

So, I was in the subway on Thursday and there was an 8-year-old kid playing Mozart's "Rondo ala Turk" at a very, very fast pace. This is actually a piece I played years ago, as well, only I was in junior high and played it much slower. Much, much slower. The kid's a prodigy. Or a savant. But I choose to go with prodigy. It happens. Check out the story of Emily Bear, a 6-year-old who plays just masterful piano. She's really good. And just 3 years older than my niece, who's still getting timeouts...

9.8.10 : feature column!

Around the time I first started writing this column (it'll be 11 years in November!), a discussion was initiated regarding for whom we, as writers, write. Plenty of talented friends of mine said things like, "I write for myself," or "I don't really try to tailor my stuff for the audience," or "to thine own self be true." Actually, no one said that last one; I just like to inject a little culture into these things. You know who said that? That's right: Yoda. The point is that plenty of people ma...

I have an announcement to make. I'm happy to tell you all that last month, I became the proud father of a healthy baby boy. 8 lbs, 2 oz. 10 fingers. 10 toes. His mother and I named him Naphtali. Okay, I'm lying. But I'm feeling left out. Apparently, there was a lot of sex going on last October (you know who you are). I'm pretty sure it had something to do with my birthday. For those of you who haven't figured it out, sex in October leads to babies in July. For those of you who really haven't ...

7.9.10 : feature column!

About a month ago, I celebrated my year anniversary at my current position. Yes, I brought in bagels. Did you even have to ask? A year was a good milestone, though, especially in this economy. I know this firsthand, since my last job abruptly ceased to be after 7 months, due to an inability to pay me and a bunch of other people. Luckily for me, 7 months has been my shortest tenure anywhere since moving up from "temp," with 7 years being my longest. It turns out that technically, there's no itc...

6.9.10 : feature column!

There are days that I wish I did more work for charity. But I don't. It's not for lack of caring for my fellow man. I'm not a Republican. In fact, I truly respect people who give of themselves, either donating their time or their money to the cause of helping others. Some causes are more important, in my mind, of course. The guy who works at the soup kitchen definitely gets more props than the guy who teaches the handicapped how to yodel. My friend Loni running the marathon to support our troo...

“I have to tell you, I’m kind of nervous,” he confided to his friend. “I get that.” “I practiced, like, two hours a night every night for the last week.” “I get that, too.” “This beer is helping.” “I get that.” He ran through the music once more in his head. Da-ta da-ta d-d-d-da-ta… The band on before them was just finishing up. “I need another beer.” “I’ll get that.” Thanks. He looked around for the rest of the guys he was playing with, most of whom spent a lot of time on stage, in ...

4.12.10 : feature column!

I live alone. Really alone. For the past two years, give or take, I haven't had a roommate or a housemate, marking the first time that's happened since October 10, 1974. I've been meaning to get a plant. And, barring the absence of a significant other, I love it. I love coming home and having no one to answer to. I love that I can veg out to the TV for hours at a time and let the world drift away. I love that I can let mail pile up on the kitchen table if I so desire. And I love that on those...

I'm not gay. I know this may come as a shock to some of you, but if you saw how I dress, you'd probably be more likely to roll with the premise. I mention this because when it comes to gay rights, most legislative outcomes theoretically don't affect me that much. I state this as a caveat, mainly so you'll know I have no personal agenda here, beyond simply stating what I think is right. And, collaterally, to alert any members of the short female fashion model contingent of my readership who ma...

2.8.10 : feature column!

Late in the evening at my friend Brian's wedding, I found myself making my way across the room to shake the hand of the King of the Judges. He took one look at me and laughed so hard he almost cried. I should explain. Some of you may remember that fateful December night when I found myself sans cash or card, unable to pay for the taxi that had just driven me home. You may remember that it turns out the penalty for being unable to pay for a taxi is more than one might expect. You may also reme...

1.8.10 : feature column!

I've spent a large portion of the last week watching movies. Most recently (ten minutes before writing this), I viewed for a second time a 1996 movie called Bullet, which centers around an exceptionally dysfunctional Brooklyn Jewish family. In the title role, Mickey Rourke (about halfway between his transformation from "attractive guy in Diner" to "weird looking guy in The Wrestler") is a heroin junkie and petty thief. A 23-year-old Adrien Brody is a slacker artist who paints on anything but an ...

re: one state, two state, red state, blue state

Bravo. Love to see you write this way.

re: short and sweet

Hilarious and awesome and endearing.

re: constant comment

Nice job!

re: and to think that i heard it on mulberry street

I love N Y too.

re: yo! i got some weight for you to watch

Absolutely one of the best columns you've written. I actually laughed....which I don't do very often. Your sintax and paragraph structure is still a little choppy, but this topic goes well with that.

re: how to lose a girl in one date

Wry, sarcastic and totally dead on.

re: sharp dressed plan

Great job on this column, Adam.

re: behind the times

Very cohesive and timely! Well written. Your tongue-in-cheek is getting much better.

re: wherefore art thou joey jo-jo junior shabadoo?

Love the fun asides and the voice is indelibly YOU.
